What Type of Hardie Board Siding Is Best for Your Chicago Home

Choosing the right siding for your home is a big deal—it impacts how your home looks, how durable it is, and how much work you'll need to put into maintenance. If you live in Chicago, this decision is even more important because of the city's diverse and often harsh weather.

Among all the options out there, James Hardie siding really stands out for its top-notch quality, durability, and stylish versatility. In this blog, we're diving into the different types of board siding you can choose from and explaining why Hardie board is a cut above the rest. Plus, we'll break down the various types of Hardie board siding to help you pick the perfect one for your Chicago home. Let's get started!

Vertical Siding

What are the Three Major Types of Board Siding?

Wood Siding

Homeowners often choose wood siding for its natural beauty and timeless appeal. It can add a charming, rustic look to any home and is available in various styles and finishes. However, wood siding comes with several drawbacks:

  • Susceptibility to Rot: Wood siding can rot when exposed to moisture, making it less durable in wet climates.
  • Insect Damage: Termites and other insects can damage wood siding, leading to costly repairs.
  • Warping and Cracking: Changes in temperature and humidity can cause wood to warp or crack over time.

While wood siding offers a beautiful, classic look, its high maintenance requirements and vulnerability to damage make it less practical.

Vinyl Siding

Plenty of homeowners prefer vinyl siding for its affordability and ease of installation. It is available in many colors and styles, providing a versatile option for various home designs. However, it's important to learn about the limitations of vinyl siding:

  • Shorter Lifespan: Vinyl siding typically needs to be replaced more frequently than other materials.
  • Warping and Cracking: Extreme temperatures can cause vinyl to warp or crack.
  • Fading: Exposure to sunlight can cause vinyl siding colors to fade over time.

Despite its lower cost, vinyl siding may not offer the same durability and longevity as other materials, making it less ideal for long-term investment.

Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement siding, particularly Hardie board, is known for its durability and low maintenance requirements. Hardie board is made from a blend of cement, sand, and cellulose fibers, offering several advantages:

  • Durability: Hardie board can withstand extreme weather conditions, making it ideal for Chicago's climate.
  • Fire Resistance: Unlike wood and vinyl, fiber cement siding is non-combustible, adding an extra layer of protection to your home.
  • Resistance to Rot and Insects: Fiber cement siding resists moisture damage and is not susceptible to insect infestations.
  • Low Maintenance: Hardie Board requires minimal maintenance, making it a cost-effective choice in the long run.

Given these benefits, Hardie fiber cement siding is an excellent option for homeowners seeking a durable, long-lasting, and low-maintenance siding solution. Hardie board costs more than vinyl on the front end, but with decades more life, far less maintenance, and the increase in home value it offers, it'll pay for itself over time.

Mark and his team did a terrific job and I could not be more pleased with the final work! Throughout whole siding installation process I was kept well informed about the progress and what will be next steps in the process. I'm living in Arlington Heights and anyone who is looking for great siding contractor can stop by my house and check their amazing work. I also plan on hiring them again for another siding project. That would be my parent's home. 🙂

We had met with several contractors and from the minute we met with Mark we knew we were going to have an excellent outcome for the remodel of our home. He was professional, knowledgeable and offered design ideas we had not even thought of. He kept us informed from start to finish which moved smoothly and without any problems. His crew, which mainly included Andy and Peter, were skillful and highly qualified in the installation of the Hardie board and windows. We could not be happier with the outcome of our beautiful home. We would highly recommend Smardbuild.

We used Mark and his Smardbuild team to replace our roof, soffits, fascia, siding, upstairs windows, gutters and front door. All work performed is top notch. We went with Hardie soffits and fascia since we had prior issues with carpenter bees drilling holes in our old, wooden soffits. In my opinion Smardbuild is the best with Hardie products. Everything looks great. It took us a while to finally settle on a color for the siding and Smardbuild was quite patient with our process. After having issues with contractors in the past, it was refreshing to work with such a professional team that actually cares about the quality of their work. Thanks Smardbuild.
